Review of the Reading Passage (Using Keywords)

-Textbook/Chapter: 동아(윤) 3rd Grade Lesson 5. The Team Behind the Tea

-Topic/Lesson Title: Review of the reading passage “Hidden People in Sports!”

-Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to categorize the keywords of the passage.

  • Students will be able to explain the content of the passage by using keywords.


-Procedure

[Preview] Wordcloud

  • T makes a Wordcloud by using the text.

  • T asks Ss to guess what that "Wordcloud" refers to.


[1st Activity] Categorizing Keyword
: Since the text is divided into three part, T could let student categorizing keywords into proper categories. You can choose either one of the two suggested options!
(Using Padlet)
  • T mixed up the keyword cards and let Ss move the keyword cards into right categories on Padlet.
(Using Worksheet)
  • T cuts the keyword cards and distributes them to Ss
  • T asks Ss to categorize the keyword and put them in order as they appeared in a text.

[2nd Activity] Petit Bac
  • T introduces Petit Bac activity by showing a video of the Korean TV show ‘The Brainiacs’ ( https://youtu.be/ctsnCNBf7Dw)
  • T teaches some rules of Petit Bac
- The word should start with the consonant suggested by a teacher.
- The word should be appropriate to the categories.
(It should be related to the categories and text.
If not, a team cannot get a point and the turn goes to other teams.)
- The word should be one word.
- If a team finish writing words, say "Petit Bac"
- After saying "Petit Bac", no one can write down anything.
- (How to Score)
1) If other teams wrote the same word, other teams can get the point.
2) If no other teams wrote the same word, a team who says "Petit Bac" can get a point.
  • PLAY IT!

[3rd Activity] Collaborative Puzzle
  • T cut the question cards into 4 pieces and distribute them to the teams.
  • In a team, each student should get 1 piece of the question card.
  • T asks Ss to fill in the blanks.
  • T asks Ss to collect every letter in a triangle shape and put them in order from the first one in <A> to the last one in <D>
  • Then Ss can find another sentence
  • [REMARK] Since this is a group work, if there is a student who finishes early, then T should ask him/her to help other teammates.

(personal experience, workshop, observation, etc)
As a big fan of Apple devices(currently owning iphone, ipad, apple watch, airpod pro),
I have wanted to use them for educational purposes as well as for looking cool.
In addition, the corona virus situation forced me to pay attention to some kinds of
“education using modern technology” such as online learning, flipped learning,
blended learning, etc. 
Language Skills Targeted:
4 skills are targeted but this time reading is my main focus

Some of the screencasting programs offer significant functionality only in premium versions. 
Android friendly screencasting tools do exist but it doesn’t have good quality and require
payment
ios friendly screencasting tool(loom) offers a pro version for verified teachers in this
COVID 19 situation.
You can’t make fancy videos but can save your time making ones.

  • When making supplementary reading explanation videos for students,
how can we make it attractive ( at least not boring)?
  • If I make videos for students based on their English levels, teaching purposes,

During language lessons, teachers often discover students’ mistakes. Research said direct revision is not good for language learners, because it makes learners unconfident. When it comes to teaching English especially for elementary students, keeping them motivated and confident are the key points. Through this lesson, We try to focus on fluency as well as accuracy. There are two ways of teaching grammar. Giving feedback to the students directly, explicitly and indirectly, implicitly. Both have good and bad effects. If we address the issue directly then It can hinder student’s confidence and cut the natural flow. But Student’s notice what is wrong and how to fix it. If we give feedback implicitly, then student’s can still focus on their work, but some of the students might not notice the errors. We’ve thought about how to fix their mistakes not explicitly in a good way and found out one fun and proper way of feedback by the teacher's training course. This is simple and fun for students as well as teachers. We don’t need to spend our efforts to prepare lessons.

* Objective : Students can recognize their mistakes naturally and fix them with pleasure and ease.

* Materials/Tools Needed : worksheet

* Challenges
1) Every member in each group has numbers.
2) Number1 students in each group go to the worksheets and tear out one sentence strip from the
worksheet and go back to their own group.
3) Every group member finds the mistake in the sentence and fixes it together.
    (Every sentence in the worksheet has 1 or 2 mistakes.) 
4) Number 1 students go to the teacher and check the answers.
5) If the answer is correct, Number 2 student takes a turn.
    If the answer is wrong, number 1 student should go to the own group and try the same steps till the answer is correct.
6) The group finishing fixing all mistakes first will be the winner.    


* Benefits
1) Students can fix mistakes with fun and ease. 
2) Students can speak and read aloud the target words repeatedly and naturally.
3) Teachers can prepare materials easily.

 * Extensions
: We can apply it to learning phrases and simple target sentences.
