1) Choose an appropriate English song - no bad words, good message, preferably with a music video that can spark students' interest. I chose the song 'True Colors' and used the TV show 'Glee' version because there is a good video clip I can use.
2) Make a video explaining the lyrics of the song you chose. Try not to go over more than 6-7 minutes. You don't have to explain every little detail of the song. Just focus on the things you think matter the most. To make a video, I used PPT, Ocam, Audacity.
3) Make worksheet Ss can fill out watching the video you made. You can make them watch it at home or in the classroom. It's up to you.
4) Before Ss fill out the worksheet, make them watch a music video first without writing anything down. Then make them fill out their worksheet watching your video explaining the lyrics. While they are watching the video, you can walk around and help them.
5) After Ss fully understand the meaning of the lyrics, give each of them different lines of lyrics. How many lines they should get is up to the classroom size. I recommend 1-3 lines per each student.
6) Make Ss draw a picture that can explain the lyrics they get. Tell them you (or a student who is good at computer) will gather every one's pictures and turn them into a music video. This will motivate them to do their share. This is an example.
(7) Before you make a music video with their pictures, you can also do an listening activity. Play the song and make Ss hold up their pictures when their lyrics come out.
I got 'picture music video' idea from another trainee, Mira. It's a great way to use a song for your class.
