Whisper Game

<Simple ways to deal with students in English class>

1. SALAME

Stop
And
Look
At
M
E

2. Anger Gauge / Happiness Gauge

<Whisper Game>
- First, make groups of 5-6 and make them line up.
- Teacher gives a word to the first student.
- The student hears the word, and passes on the word that pops into his/her mind after hearing the word.
- The turn continues.
- After the word is passed on up to the last student, they speak out the word.
- Ss share their answers together. All the answers from each group will vary.

* Difference between the actual whisper game and this activity:
- In the original whisper game, students are asked to pass on the exact word or sentence they hear. However, in this game, it's more like guessing game in that students don't know what the exact word is. They have to come up with a new word or sentence.

* Variation: This activity can be used for grammar lessons as well.
-For example
1) The teacher gives the word 'air-conditioner'
2) Ss have to make a sentence like : 'I use this to cool myself'
3) The next S hears the sentence, guesses what is it and says : 'It is especially useful in the hot summer', and so on.
4) Last student has to guess what the word is.

Using a relative pronoun 'who' for describing ideal types

I've wanted to know how to combine grammar teaching with communicative approach. I think that grammar should be embedded in meaningful, authentic and communicative contexts. I tried to come up with the effective ways to contextualize the targeted form 'who' in natural, authentic classroom activity. I devised grammar class about use of a relative pronoun 'who' for describing students' ideal men or women.

- I had a certain class for grammar instruction teaching 'who'.
- This class is devised right after the class to help students internalize this targeted form better through some activities.

First activity
-using the lyric of Korean song 'I need a girl' by Tae Yang
(lyrics or Music video might not be appropriate for teaching materials. We can use  older song '희망사항' instead.)
Lyrics of those two Korean songs are all about describing their ideal women.)

ex) I need a girl 뭘 해도 이쁜
: I need a girl who looks pretty no matter what she does.
치마보다 청바지가 잘 어울리는 그런 여자
: I need a girl who looks better in jeans than a skirt.

Second activity (talking about ideal men or women)

-3-steps speaking

:First step : with your partner (tell him/her your own sentences starting with I like someone who.....)
:Second step : with one of group members (tell him/her your own sentences starting with I like someone who..... and what you heard from your partner starting with he/she<your partner likes someone who.....)
:Third step : with the other of group members (tell him/her about his/her sentences you heard from other member starting with you like someone who.....)

Word clues

This activity is a pair work and for reviewing the words.
The students have different sets of clues with their partners.

1. Each student find and write down the proper clues for their words.
They can add their own clues to the words.

2. Next, explain their words to the partner with their clues.
For example, students can say "It means feeling to eat some food" for the word 'hungry'.

3. While the partner is explaining, the other has to write down the key hints and guess the word.

4. After both finish explaining their words, check out the results.

Activity: Word/Sentence Memory Game

Word Memory Game 😊
1. Show 5(or more) words in order in a short time, about 5 seconds.
2. At this time, students CANNOT write the words on the answer sheet.
3. After 5 seconds, teacher says write! (On the screen, no words remain) Students recall the words and write down the words or words' meaning in order on the answer sheet.
4. Switch the answer sheet with other groups and check the answers.
* It's really easy and simple activity, it will take 1-2 minutes for teacher to type in the words.
* For lower level students, it will be better to give English words and let them write Korean meaning. For higher level students, you can provide Korean and make them write in English. For mixed level, one set of Korean and another set of English will be okay.

<word memory game - answer sheet>

Sentence Memory Game 😊
1. Make students groups of 4, assign each student number 1 to 4.
* It's better for them to use different color pens in terms of responsibility
2. Teacher shows students a sentence on the screen. Each student has to memorize the sentence in a short time.
3. After 10-20 seconds, teacher says "write!" and student #1 should write it down without watching it. In this stage, group members CANNOT help student #1.
4. Students take their turns. Student #2 has to memorize and write the next sentence, which is shown to students for another 10-20 seconds. This time, student #2 CAN correct the sentence that student #1 wrote if it contains any mistakes.
5. Students take their turns once or twice (normally twice for Dialog in textbook).
6. Before checking, teacher play audio of the text and ask students to check by themselves. Students can discuss with group members in this stage.
7. Switch the answer sheet with other group and check the answers.
* You can provide some Korean clues with students.
* Students' awareness of punctuation can be promoted while checking the answers.

Speakers Corner & Table Talk

Speaker’s Corner
This is a fluency activity that is suitable for relatively high-level students in schools or classes that support the use of technology and/or shared online spaces. Introduce the concept of Speaker’s Corner by showing videos from the ‘You Are Here’ YouTube Channel   https://www.youtube.com/user/youareherecafe/
Give students a list of topics they can discuss. (See Below)
Divide them into groups of two or three and give them some time to prepare what they are going to say.   If enough recording devices are available, pair teams up with each other so that they can take turns recording each other.  Videos can then be uploaded to a private communal space (like a class Band).  Students are encouraged (or required) to watch and comment on their classmates videos.   For lower level students, the speaking task can be simplified and additional language prompts can be provided

Table Talk Table Talk Discussions  (based on Toastmasters - about - local clubs)
Students either randomly choose a table talk topic or can choose one themselves. They have 2 minutes to prepare their answer. They then have one minute to answer the question with a mini-speech. This can be done whole group or in small groups, recorded and shared or not.
Possible Topics here

Speakers' Corner Videos

Speakers' Corner   Hyde Park Video
        You Are Here Cafe

ASSIGNMENT (sample)
Watch your speakers' corner video and at least two others from your class. After watching your video, post a short reflection about what you observed of your language usage, speaking style, and non-verbal communication. What specifically might you try to improve? Be NICE to yourself!  Also post at least two comments about the substance of others' videos.

Logic Problems

Logic Problems
Provide students with a logic problem or riddle that they need to discuss together in order to solve.

Example: Danny’s Family  Danny is having a birthday party with 6 of his family members. They are his grandmother, mother, aunt, brother, father, and uncle. Their names in random order are Ben, Julie, Mike, Betty, Jane, and Luke.
Listen to the clues to discover the names of Danny's family members.
Clues:
1. Ben is not Danny’s uncle.
2. Danny’s grandmother’s name starts with B.
3. Luke is not Danny’s brother.
4. Julie is not his aunt.
5. Danny’s father’s name is Mike.

Puzzle and Riddle Sources

Logic Puzzles Google Doc

Adaptions &Extensions

Clue Dictation: Instead of providing students with the clues, dictate the clues. Students have to accurately write down the clues and confirm them with group members before solving the puzzle.

Pre-puzzle Treasure Hunt: Hide the clues around the classroom.  Students have to find them in order to solve the puzzle.

Student Generated Clues: Give students a scenario and/or graphic organizer and have them write clues.  Exchange these with other groups and solve each others' puzzles.

Reading and grammar exercise by Running Dictation

Activity
Details
Running dictation
Teacher chooses a reading material (a paragraph-long) which contains some relative pronouns.
Teacher divides it into 3 or 4 part, and shuffles them in wrong order.
Teacher posts them on the wall, and makes students do “running dictation” as a group activity.
Running dictation : A student runs to the wall and memorize his or her allotment of the reading paragraph and tells the group recorder what he or she memorizes, and the the next students does the same until the group finishes completing their reading material”
After completing the dictation part, students correct the order of the parts of the paragraph and read it individually.
Reading comprehension
While reading the well-ordered paragraph all together, students solve some comprehension check questions.
Teacher explains some important vocabulary and difficult structures and checks if students understood the contents of the paragraph or not.
Formative test
Teacher gives some example sentences which have a blank and makes students fill in the blanks with the correct relative pronoun.
