Topic/Lesson Title: Listening & Speaking Class Using a Drama

Source of Inspiration/ Experimental Goal:   I wanted to move away from the exam-oriented class and teach authentic English using the media. That's because it will provide students with an environment where they can enjoy learning English in the long run. Dramas are interesting and useful material not only for language learning but also for cultural learning. Since shadow reading or shadow speaking has already proved effective for language learners, I wanted to encourage students to follow this method to improve their communication skills.

Learning Objective:  (What will learners know or be able to do after your lesson?) Students will be able to understand what Thanksgiving Day is. learn the key expressions of the lines. read the lines of one of the characters fluently with accents like actors.

Teaching Development Goals: (What do you hope to learn and/or accomplish as an educator?                                                       Which criteria will you be focusing on improving)  Giving clear and efficient instructions and information.  Encouraging all students to participate actively in class.

Detailed Procedure Step / Time Details TEE Language Used Warm-up (Drawing attention to the class) (5’) -Greeting -Watching Word Art and guessing today’s topic -Solving quizzes about the ‘Thanksgiving Day’ using Kahoot -Introducing today’s learning objectives -Hi, everyone. How’s it going  today? -Let’s start the class with Word Art. All of these words are related to today’s topic word. Can you guess what they are about? -Shall we solve quizzes about ‘Thanksgiving Day’? Please, access ‘Kahoot’ and enter this code.  -Did you learn anything new about Thanksgiving Day? -Here are today’s learning aims. Shall  we read them aloud altogether? Development (42’) -Predicting the content of a drama by watching the video without sound. -Watching the video with the sound on and solving quizzes about it with ISLCOLLECTIVE. -Learning key expressions using Quizlet -Practicing shadow reading by individual &  group using Youtube  (Language Learning with Youtube) -Showing how to use the voice recognition function on the phone -Dubbing the drama -I’ll show you a scene of an American drama ‘Friends’ without sound.  -Can you guess what happened to them? -This time let’s watch it with the sound on and solve quizzes to check your understanding about the video. -There are 5 multiple choice questions.  When the question appears on the screen, please mark the answer with your finger. -Now let's learn the key expressions from the drama. First, can you guess the meaning of English expression by looking at the image?  -I will show you Korean this time, so please speak English. -Let me give you a handout. Can you fill in the blanks in the handout?.   -From now on, you will decide your role in your group and practice shadow reading. Before that, let's practice each line one by one as a whole group.   -Each group consists of 3 members. Now, play Monica, Joey, Phoebe & Chandler, respectively. You can access Youtube and practice it by watching it yourself. How to use LLY is described in detailed in the handout. The most important thing is to try to imitate the actor's accent and pronunciation alike. Practice individually for 4 minutes, and practice with your team members for the next 4 minutes.    -You can check the accuracy of your sound using a phone's voice recognition function. Let me tell you how to use it. First, press "Send Message" and switch keyboard input to English. Press the microphone icon and speak in English. Check the accuracy of pronunciation by looking at the sentences entered.   -Are you done with your practice? I'll turn the screen on and turn down the volume, so come out and dub the drama. Which team wants to go first? Wrap-up (Assignment &  Preview of the next class) (3’) -Assigning homework using Padlet -Previewing the next class -Today's homework is to make new sentences by changing bold parts of the designated lines on Padlet. You can write your own sentences on Padlet. -Next class, we’ll correct the mistakes in your sentences and practice speaking using the sentences. -That’s all for today. Have a great day!
