Teaching Demonstration #1(Taylor Kim)

Textbook/Chapter

Topic/Lesson Title:
Physical Appearance
Source of Inspiration/ Experimental Goal

Teachers and students haven’t had any chance to meet each other face to face because of the breakout of COVID 19.  To relieve the thirst for meeting friends, classmates, and teachers, we can have vocabulary class to learn physical appearance and talk about their appearance with friends.
This class idea and structure are borrowed from Chris Westergaard’s youtube channel(https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeEcVAqDA7Ro8K-CL_8apVQ) and I have customized it for my class and the class was always successful. I had to customize it again for the online setting.
Language Skills: reading, listening, speaking, writing

listening, speaking, writing
Learning Objective:  (What will learners know or be able to do after your lesson?)

Student will be able to
  1. Have daily conversations with physical appearance vocabulary
  2. Describe people with physical appearance vocabulary

Which criteria will you be focusing on improving)

  • Encourage students to submit their outcome (the montage they draw) to google drive.
Don’t show it, Describe it!

Teaching Demonstration Lesson Plan 1(Online Teaching)

Topic/Lesson Title: English literature class (poetry writing)

Source of Inspiration/ Experimental Goal:

I’ve wanted to include English literature in my class, but other genres like novels were too long
and somewhat burdensome to use in class, so I decided to deal with poems. I planned to include
the poem writing on ‘my future dream’ in the performance assessment of the second semester.
This lesson is designed as a prior lesson to prepare for the performance assessment.

Learning Objective:  (What will learners know or be able to do after your lesson?)
Students will be able to
  1. understand how rhymes form in English poems
  2. practice making rhymes by themselves.
  3. write their poems with rhymes in groups.

Teaching Development Goals: (What do you hope to learn and/or accomplish as an educator?
Which criteria will you be focusing on improving)

  1.  Trying the teaching tools that I’ve never used before.
  2.  Giving clear and efficient instructions and information.
  3.  Encouraging all students to participate actively in class

Materials/Tools

Nearpod(slides, quizz, field trip, collaborate, flipgrid), Google Classroom, Lyricstraining

Self-reflection
  • not enough time to do the group work and share it
  • the necessity to think about how the performance assessment will reflect the grammatical elements of the poem

Post-reading activities with Nearpod/Padlet

1. Procedure
My goal was to review the whole text from starting the words, then norms and to each sentence, and to expand their thoughts out of the text by debating.

2. Review with Nearpod

 1. word review - pictionary
T shows some words from last class and asks students to depict a word by drawing.
Then, T shows each picture and asks what kind of word the picture depicts.

  2. text review - guess what
T asks Ss to guess the answer of the questions about the norms in the text before watching the
video.

  3. text review - fill in the blanks

3. Debate with Padlet
-T asks each student to pick a side and make breakout rooms according to their sides.
-T goes around each breakout room by checking and helping Ss.

-T asks each group to write down 2 rationales on the Padlet board.

-T asks Ss to express their opinions and refute them with reasonable rationales.

Telling Problems and Giving Advice (Online Class)

Grade Level: Middle School 2nd Grade
Textbook/Chapter: 동아(윤) Lesson 5. Living Healthily and Safely
Topic: Talking about Problems and Giving Advice

[Lesson Procedure]
1. Let Ss join the Google Classroom  (classroom.google.com, CODE: ktdhtqz)

  - Ss should find out the sentence consisting of the number of the words on the upper right side.
- The very first letter of the first word of the sentence should be a letter in a square box.
- Every letter of the sentence should be connected.

3. Drilling (Padlet)
  - To brainstorm the idea, ask Ss to write down advice for each problem.
- By using the ideas T let Ss practice a dialog in pairs. (Zoom Breakout Room)
[SAMPLE DIALOG] A: What's wrong? B: (Problem) A: That's too bad.(Advice) B: OK, I will.

4. Dictogloss
- T shows the picture and ask questions related to the picture. (Make a guess of the dialog)
- T plays an audio file and let Ss to write down the words they can listen to.
- T puts Ss into groups(Zoom Breakout Room) and let them reconstruct the dialog

(Below are the slides used in the lesson!)
